[Final guidelines for Capital and Liquidity Treatment of Crypto-asset Exposures]
[Mark Joshua – Director, Banking Capital and Liquidity Standards Division]
Risks and emerging global patterns for crypto-assets are constantly changing.
Our final guidelines for Capital and Liquidity Treatment of Crypto-asset Exposures aim to provide clarity for banks and insurers and contribute to public confidence in Canada’s financial system.
The guidelines set out the capital and liquidity treatment of a financial institution’s exposure to crypto-assets, reflect stakeholder input received during our consultation last year, and incorporate international standards.
The final guidelines come in effect in Q1, 2026, and will replace the interim advisory on the regulatory treatment of crypto-asset exposures that was issued in August 2022.
